Miss Periwinkle, or Mrs. Periwinkle, is a snail who is a pilot. She originally appeared only in the Franklin story "Franklin and Snail's Dream" before appearing several more times in the spinoff series Franklin and Friends, including in the program's intro sequence.
Plot[]
In "Franklin and Snail's Dream," After Snail expresses a dream to fly, his good friend Franklin sets out to make it a reality, having been told by his parents that you should always follow your dreams. He and Snail try several different methods, but each time they come up short. Snail seems to give up on the idea, and Franklin despairs, wondering to his father, Mr. Turtle, if it's possible that there are some dreams that are simply too big to come true.
After learning about Snail's dream, Mr. Turtle arranges a surprise. He has Miss Periwinkle, a snail pilot, fly in to meet Snail. Snail is astonished to see her flying a plane. When Miss Periwinkle tells him that people had told her she couldn't fly either, he asks if this is because of people thinking that snails can't fly. She, however, tells him that she was told that girls couldn't be pilots. She then invites Snail onto her plane and they fly in the sky.
Miss Periwinkle at some point becomes Mrs. Periwinkle. She becomes friends with Snail and his family and sometimes brings back gifts from Snail from her travels. In "Franklin and Snail Mail," she brings back postage stamps from around the world for Snail's collection. The gifts inspire Snail and his friends to imagine visiting far-off places. Meanwhile, Mrs. Snail invites Mrs. Periwinkle inside the Snail family home for a catch-up and for tea and cake. Franklin and Bear decide to create model landscapes of those places for Snail to explore, and Mrs. Snail and Mrs. Periwinkle join in the fun.
Trivia[]
- In "Franklin and Snail's Dream," Mr. Turtle introduces her as Miss Periwinkle. In "Franklin and Snail Mail" and later "Franklin Takes Flight" from Franklin and Friends, however, Franklin addresses her as Mrs. Periwinkle, suggesting that she has perhaps gotten married since the two were first introduced.
